Jails For Jesus

When in doubt for something to write about, always turn to The Globe and Mail.

Today's paper had an article about Governor Jeb Bush (brother of the dimwit President) opening the first correctional institution in Flordia to be run as a faith based initiative.

Here is a quote from Doug Saunders' article:

"I can't think of a better place to reflect on the awesome love of our Lord Jesus than to be here at Lawtey Correctional. God bless you."

And this isn't the
end of it...Lawtey Correction is said to be the model for many more faith-based programs, all stemming from George W. Bush's obsession with granting the religious right more power and influence in the United States, across various social programs.

The hypocrisy of the situation kills me. Certain Americans will rant and rave about how Iran is an evil theocracy, where religion trumps matters of democracy and common sense. Yet these very same Americans are trying to transform their own nation into a fundamentalist Christian theocracy! There are elements of U.S. society trying hard to replace the constitution with the Bible as the supreme law of the land....and it seems like these people are winning!

I know Americans to be caring, honest, hard-working people who value their freedom and tolerance. But how long before all those wonderful characteristics are thrown into the abyss of fundamentalist Christianity? The present administration has to be stopped...and I only hope John Kerry can do it come November.

In the mean time, I am once again thankful that this zealous religious madness has not taken root in Canada...and that we are now a society that refuses to allow it. But one cannot become complacement...the separation of church and state in a secular society is maintained through constant vigilence. Something to keep in mind if you're planning to vote for the scary, overly-fundamentalist Conservative Party in the coming federal election...
