LAW & ORDER: Trial by Harper

So, Wood-boy says he's going to get tough on crime. He's going to get rid of the faint-hope clause, increase sentence lengths and make them consecutive, speed up deportations, and make Canada safe and clean and happy for all its Leave-it-to-Beaver residents. You can read all about it here.

No doubt everyone will have a gleaming white picket fence by the time he's done.

Well, Wood-boy and his Conservatives are preying on the fear that crime is rising in Canda. Unfortunately, Statistics Canada stands in firm disagreement with this preposterous belief.

Shall I tell you what Wood-boy's statements really mean for Canadians?

1--He's going to build more prisons (he says he won't, but he's a liar...in the best tradition of all politicians);

2--He's going to try his damndest to restore the death penalty, because he is apparently a mean-spirited, vengeful god (I mean, politician);

3--He's going to try his damndest to ignore virtually all the legal rights of prisoners as set out in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, for the sake of optics (it's just a piece of paper to him, I suppose...)

A Conservative Canada would be a place where revenge, retribution and punishment take precedence over rehabilitation, healing, and second chances. Haven't there been enough wrongful convictions to show that there are procedural errors that must be fixed in police forces & crown attorney offices across the
country? Is there a deafness to the fact that poverty, lack of education, social service cuts & broken families lead to crime, and that these problems must be rectified?

To say nothing of the fact that criminals are also victims, in many ways...but that's too nuanced a debate for Conservatives.

In the span of a week, the Conservatives has talked only about spending money on the military, sending people to jail, and covering up the fact that they don't like official billingualism and the freedom of women to have an abortion. The other main parties have been more concerned with urban infrastructure and health care. Can you smell the difference?

Let's face it: voting Conservative is like saying that you believe Canada has become Sodom and Gomorrah. If you are a stiff moral absolutist who thinks gays are an abomination, women shouldn't have control over their bodies, and that all murders and rapists should die horrible, excruciating deaths...then you've found you party, baby!

Pass that barf bucket over here...I think I need it.
