When it rains, it pours

Sometimes, life really does imitate a Jerry Bruckheimer film.

Yesterday, a lightning-fast rain storm screamed across Edmonton, turning it into a giant wading pool, with large hail thrown in for good measure. But aside from the normal damage, read what it did to the largest mall in the world:

Adjusters assess storm damage to West Edmonton Mall
Last Updated Mon, 12 Jul 2004 8:30:17

EDMONTON - The West Edmonton Mall will stay closed for an undetermined time as insurance adjusters examine the damage from a severe hailstorm Sunday.

The storm damaged the roof and forced the evacuation of 30,000 people from the world's largest shopping mall. Water was ankle-deep in parts of the 800-store mall after pipes on the second floor burst at the height of Sunday afternoon shopping.

Tens of thousands of customers and employees streamed out into a flooded parking lot, where the water rose as high as waist level because ice from the hail had blocked storm sewers.

You can read the rest of the story HERE, but as someone who once worked in a mall, this scenario is rather terrifying. I'm beginning to think I really do live the safest part of Canada. I've never even SEEN hail!
