It's a good news day for us civil libertarians

Again, the news brings us stories about the joys of freedom and democracy...and the whacked souls who would fight against it.

1--Does anyone have just cause? Didn't think so!

Good news on the same sex marriage front. Just as the Supreme Court of the Yukon makes a decision in favour of same sex marriage -- making the territory the fourth legal jurisdiction in Canada where such marriages are legal -- the U.S. Senate votes down the proposed Constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. Cheryl Jacques, president of the Human Rights Campaign, succinctly summed up the failed rights grab:

"Today, we saw President Bush and the Republican leadership attempt to divide America and it backfired. We saw the politics of distraction fail and fail handily."

Civilization remains standing...and continues to fight against the darkness. That sound you hear is me doing the Charter of Rights-Democracy Happy Dance!

2--You young Republicans (nee, Conservatives) want to do WHAT?

Kasra Nejatian, a member of the Ontario Campus Conservatives and a Queen's University student, obviously has too much time on his hands, as THIS story proves: he started an internet petition to have Moore charge under the Canada Elections Act.

_______________________

"Michael Moore came to our country, stuck his nose in our election, and broke the law," said Nejatian. "So I just want Elections Canada to charge him for breaking country's law."

According to section 331 of the Act:
"No person who does not reside in Canada shall, during an election period, in any way induce electors to vote or refrain from voting...for a particular candidate unless the person is:
(a) a Canadian citizen; or
(b) a permanent resident"

Nejatian's lawyer says the complaint to Elections Canada will likely be in before the end of this week.

When I originally saw this on Sinister Thoughts, I thought it was some sort of ridiculous tabloid garbage. Then it showed up on The National...which left me shaking my head, and laughing my ass off. Why are certain Conservatives such sore losers? Isn't it enough that the Canadian electorate sent a message that they can become the government ONLY when they stop cultivating the beliefs of right-wing, moderate fascism? To say nothing of the fact that no one complained of election interference when Ronald (KILL THE BASTARDS) Reagan & Margaret (PRIVATIZE THE BASTARDS) Thatcher offered support to their buddy, ex-Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

Then there is the constitutional argument...and the fact that, according to Section 2 of our Charter of Rights, Michael Moore can say what he damn well pleases, as confirmed by Constitutional lawyer Julius Grey:
______________________

"The question is, is he allowed to influence voters? I think if he is influencing voters, it's because he is of interest to the media, he expresses his opinion, [and] that's legitimate in a democracy. If we interpret the law to prevent him from doing it, I think the law would be unconstitutional."

So how do I cap off this crazy coverage of a petition sponsored by a buffoon of a Conservative? Let's give a round of applause to Mike Bradley, the mayor of Sarnia, Ontario. He says he'll make Moore an honorary Canadian citizen to try to shield him from any charges.

Bless his patriotic, Charter of Rights-stamped heart!
