In today's Olympic update...

cockburn_athens040820.jpg (1) We’ve won our second medal: SILVER in women’s trampoline. Congratulations to Karen Cockburn of Toronto, for a dazzling display of aerobatics. Her performance is even more amazing considering that she is afraid of heights!

Does anyone else find it interesting that we’re winning medals in the newer, more oddball sports, such as trampoline and synchronized diving? It seems quintessentially Canadian, somehow…

(2) Japan handed Canada its first defeat in baseball. It’s a pity, but this is Japan we’re taking about, where the popularity and depth of talent is equal to that of the United States. We’ll see how well our intrepid Canadians do against Cuba…

(3) Canadian women continue to kick ass in beach volleyball, with a consecutive sets victory against Cuba. Then again, how can you not kick ass wearing the kind of outfits on display in all the women’s games.

The male beach volleyball players are positively overdressed compared to their female colleagues. It could be because of the heat…but I’m guessing it’s more to do with audience appreciation. Eye candy does have a place at the Olympics. Remember…the ancient Olympians were nude or nearly nude during all of their competitions.

(4) Why does GEORGIA have a gold medal…and we don’t? It’s a sign of the apocalypse…or of a tiny nation which somehow has a BETTER training regime at play!
