Do I watch tonight’s third and final Presidential debate?
Certainly, there ARE people actually watching these linguistic confrontations. The first debate pulled in 62.5 million viewers, the second 44 million (compare that to the Friends finale with 52 million). That’s a lot of average joes watching two middle-aged gentlemen bash each other with cliches and slogans.
Mind you, Smallville and Gilmore Girls would make much more enjoyable viewing…the latter in particular, which is written with a love of the English language that is second to none on American TV. And unlike President Bush during the debates, Gilmore Girls is intentionally funny.
Do I need to hear another preposterous claim that our drugs come from the Third World…AGAIN?
Do I need to sit back for an hour and idly contemplate whether or not John Kerry’s hair is real…AGAIN?
At the end of the second debate, I stared, open mouthed, at the TV screen, amazed that an ABC News commentator would reprimand Kerry for using the word ORWELLIAN. Taking into account the dark road on which the United States is travelling, you’d think a pundit would recognize the irony.
Then again, irony is much too subtle for a Presidential debate.
