How many bigots does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Let’s spend this morning de-coding Stephen Harper’s ridiculous editorial in today’s Globe and Mail.

In addition to having the opportunity to support same-sex marriage, MPs should also be allowed to vote to uphold traditional marriage.

This is the let’s have our cake and eat it too line. A preposterous tit-for-tat that isn’t able to hide what it truly is: the loony right wing is going to lose, and they need to grasp any straw they can get their hands on.

The Conservative Party will work to ensure that any bill changing the definition of marriage contains the most vigorous protections for religious groups, including protections for religious organization employers and employees alike…

This is code for “let’s ensure that religious organizations can legally discriminate against people it thinks are abominations against nature”. Stephen Harper is an abomination, but I don’t prevent him from running for a House of Commons seat. I’m beginning to think egalitarian Canada would die a quick death under a Harper government… (pause for hollow laughter at the thought of a HARPER government!) And with all due respect (HAHA, whatever…) to the Conservatives, religion in Canada isn’t exactly storming the gates of popular culture…but it’s nice that Mr. Harper’s party is doing all it can to prop them up.

The court’s decision is an opportunity to discuss alternatives, rather than rushing to judgement, forcing parliamentarians to vote to end the traditional institution of marriage against their will and that of their constituents.

Where to start…

1-Constitutents can be WRONG!

2-Conservatives will use any means necessary to try and sell civil-unions as a panacea to same-sex marriage. They keep claiming that it destroys tradition. Well, here’s a news flash: (a) our neighbours to the south fought long and hard to make the point that SEPARATE BUT EQUAL IS NEVER EVER EQUAL!!! (b) slavery used to be a tradition as well, but I don’t see it around anymore…unless the Conservatives aren’t telling us the whole story about the staffers in their offices…

The government’s attempt to force same-sex marriage by judicial fiat has failed. Now let the real debate begin.

Bite me, Mr. Harper! The debate is over. Rights trump politics and bigotry, and you sir, are a bigot…make no mistake.

So endeth today’s rant. Have a nice day. smile
