Stupid people, smart animals

Although I can’t link to it (it’s on the pay portion of the site), Margaret Wente’s Globe and Mail column for today — Earth to Harper - you’re not in Texas — has some smart advice/commentary for the bigoted leader of Canada’s party of mostly bigots (with some exceptions, such as Belinda Stronach, bless her heart):

“Mr. Harper’s fixation with same-sex marriage is a mystery to me. It’s a loser for him. It has divided his own party. He says that most Canadians are on his side, but he’s clearly wrong. Most Canadians, especially the urban, suburban and younger ones, are either neutral or in favour of it. This is especially true in urban Quebec and Ontario, where he desperately needs to pick up votes. That thunder you hear is the sound of younger, urban, natural-born conservatives stampeding over to the Liberals. Gay and straight alike, they don’t want anything to do with somebody who sounds like he’s channelling the Pope or Jerry Falwell on a bad day.”

Stupid man, stupid politician. Our future Prime Minister? When hell drops to absolute zero.

Animals are much more intelligent than we are. The recent tsunami orphaned a baby hippo in Kenya…and the sweet little animal has coped with the situation by being adopted into a new family. As you can see in the picture, he’s latched onto a 100+ year old turtle, in what could very well be the best poster for unorthodox-but-happy family groupings. They seem very warm and content in each other’s company…but if Stephen Harper had his say, I’m sure he’d try to stop it. After all, in his mind, a hippo should be forcibly raised by other hippos (preferably one male and one female), and have none of this shameful contact with a non-mammal. He’d also set up an ad campaign against hippo-turtle relationships, claiming that the government would impose such disgusting unorthodoxy on the animal kingdom.

Thank god Harper doesn’t live in Kenya.
