Update 2 -- Those without shame, and those with plenty of it!

I’m tentatively letting Karen Redmond out of the house of shame. I wish she was a little more vocal and forthright in her public position, but at least she’s doing her best to keep her fellow Liberal MPs true to the word “Liberal”.

However, new extra special shame awards go to Tom Wappel and Pat O’Brien, both of whom are actively fighting to destroy the same-sex marriage legislation.

I only have one thing to say to you two fools: there is not one fiber of your being that deserves, in any way, the mantle of being a Liberal. Your opposition to human dignity and rights makes Joseph Stalin look like the leader of the Progressive movement! The two of you can go drown yourselves in a pool of your own bile…

On the other hand…

Big time kudos to Jim Prentice and James Moore of the Conservatives, who have shown that there are STILL progressive red Tories left in a world swamped by neo-conservative bigots. They will both vote in favour of same sex marriage, and are eloquent in their comments.

First, Mr. Prentice:

“What moral or political authority do we have to deny gay Canadians the issuance of a government marriage license? The answer in my mind is clear. We have no such right at all because whether two people of the same sex marry, and how and whether their gender enters into the relationship, is none of the government’s business, providing they do no harm to anyone else.”

Mr. Moore added that “he’s concluded there is no harm in allowing two people who love each other from marrying.”

Finally, I’m taking Belinda Stronach out of the dog house, as she has clarified her position:

Belinda Stronach, who also ran for the leadership of the Tories last year, has strongly indicated she will vote in favour of the bill.

She said she hopes to persuade some of her colleagues to accept the legislation.

“People have to do some inner reflection. They have to consult their constituents and they’re free to make their choice,” she said. “I’m hopeful that some will vote for the legislation.”

I’m very proud of these people — true Canadians in every sense of the word. That’s something I NEVER thought I’d say about a present-day Conservative in the House of Commons.

The old adage is true: you’re never safe from surprise until you’re dead.
