BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 1

Teleplay by Ronald D. Moore

Story by David Eick

Directed by Michael Rymer

“I want you to remember one thing: I do not regret anything that I did. Be sure that whatever you’re going to do, you don’t regret it later.”

This reminds me very much of the last part one episode we’ve seen (Act of Contrition): all set up, but intimidating, tense, powerful set up…definitely leaving the viewer wanting more…MUCH more.

It all starts off with the teaser — an amazing sequence set to some stunning music. In the span of four minutes, it sets up all the dynamics on display in this episode, as well as throwing in some jaw-dropping sequences…specifically Starbuck yelling out Lee’s name while having sex with Baltar!

And what’s with Number Six? She’s a pile of conflicting emotions in this episode, but of all the sides we see to her personality, the look of devastation on her face while watching Baltar and Starbuck go at it borders on the heart-wrenching. This woman has some serious issues…but they’re nothing compared to Boomer, in all her various models!

Other worthy items of note:

  1. The two-track conversation between Baltar, the President and Number Six. The man manages to hold it together while skating ever-so-close to the edge of lunacy. It makes for some outrageous acting, and a hell of a lot of belly laughs.

  2. Boomer and Baltar in the barracks…talk about intense! So few words, spoken with so many undercurrents, and so many consequences. It’s yet another Emmy-worthy performance from James Callis, and it also leaves a startling end to the act, as you hear the gun shot go off behind the closed door. Maybe Number Six is right…perhaps the Boomer model of Cylon IS weak?

  3. The President becoming totally messianic, and taking Starbuck along with her for the ride. It makes for a conclusion that will leave your mouth open.

Frankly, I can’t finish this review until part 2 next week, but I’m betting it will live up to this preamble.
