Requiem

I disagreed with almost everything this man believed in and stood for. I think he marginalized women & gay people, blindly ignored the consequences of pedeophelia in the priesthood, and contributed indirectly to the spread of AIDS in Africa by campaigning against birth control and contraceptives.

That said, I’m feeling much sadder than I thought I would at his passing. In his general stand on human rights, his contribution to the destruction of Soviet communism and the liberation of Poland, and his love of children, he is second to none.

Disagreement aside, he was a giant on the world stage, and there will not be another like him for some considerable time.
