Thursday Tid-Bits

(1) Same Sex Marriage has passed second reading. Yes, it’s now in a super-committee stage designed to appease the bigots of the Liberal party, and yes, it could die thanks to the homicidal-election-drive of the Conservatives. But it’s still a landmark, and there’s always hope…

(2) Ed Broadbent, the former NDP leader who returned to politics as a member of Parliament last year, says he won’t run in the next federal election because of his wife’s ailing condition.

This is a shame. From his tactful comments, you can tell that he’s not been happy with the state of affairs in government, calling the House of Commons “dysfunctional” (which is EXTREMELY tactful on his part — let’s face it, Question Period has become the shit hole of Canadian politics).

This is the man who once said that he, (then Prime Minister) Pierre Trudeau and (then Conservative Leader) Robert Stanfield never disagreed about policies for Canadians…only in how to implement them. Truer words have never been spoken. Broadbent is giant from an age when such men and women were common in Ottawa. Such figures are now, sadly, extinct…

(3) Star Wars creator George Lucas says he believes Revenge of the Sith will be a box-office failure. In an interview with Time magazine, the director says “like everyone who makes movies, I’m always convinced the next one will be a flop.”

To be fair, Star Wars Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith has been getting the best reviews out of all the three prequel movies, and if the stunning novel is any indication of the quality of the script, we’re in for a real treat. But it’s always nice for Lucas to repent his hubris from time to time…after all, the best Star Wars movie of all time, The Emprie Strikes Back, is the one in which he had the least amount of involvement.

I’m guessing box office will take care of itself…
