James Doohan 1920-2005

I just got home, went online, and discovered that Jimmy Doohan has passed away.

Unless you’ve been living on an asteroid a thousand lightyears away, you’ll know him as Montgomery (Scotty) Scott, chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise, and one of the original seven cast members of Star Trek. One of seven people who have burned themselves into the minds of millions of television viewers for all time.

Not many people know that he’s also Canadian (born in Vancouver), and a hero of World War II.

But as important as that is, he’ll be missed for his charm, humour and exclamations of engineering-based doom — entertaining generations of Star Trek fans across a span of nearly forty years. He’s part of the pop-culture and television history, and his memory will continue…hopefully, far beyond the 23rd and 24th centuries.

“Give the word, Admiral.”

“Mister Scott…the word is given.”

“Aye, sir.”
