Revised Rating

I saw War of the Worlds for the second time, this past Friday, with my friend James. It remains a thought-provoking film, as you can read in my review, or in James’ review.

I’ve decided to bump up my rating to an 8.5 ouf ot 10 — there’s something compelling and powerful about this film…something so out-of-kilter with other alien invasion stories, though I wasn’t sure what it was…

I’ve decided that this is one of the small group of post 9/11 films & shows that manages to evoke apocalyptic events without preaching — in fact, Spielberg presents the images in his film without lingering on them too long…but long enough for the audience to draw its own conclusions and decide for itself what it feels. At times, such moments might be a little “on the nose”, though they’re crafted with a gentle touch, well aware of the lingering feelings that surround such tragedy.

In this sense, Spielberg has crafted a film that assumes the audience is intelligent…and that, for a Hollywood movie, is so rare that it borders on pricless!
