Happy generic-multi-named-civic-bank-holiday Monday!

Some tid bits from todays’s news:

1—It seems that the city of Montreal, flush with its apparent success as host of the World Aquatic Championships, is mulling a bid to host the 2016 summer olympics! This is the same city that held the Olympics — to disastrous financial effect — in 1976. An Olympics noted in history as the only summer games in which the host country failed to win a gold medal.

Is that silence you hear? The echoing void, pierced only by the chirping of bored crickets?

Well, listen closely, and you’ll hear three things in particular:

(i) the deep sigh of Montreal citizens, who’s taxes have had to repay the 1976 Olympics for THIRTY YEARS!

(ii) the giant THUDS of falling concrete from the Montreal Olympic Stadium…it’s decay proceeding as scheduled…

(iii) the laughter of former mayor Jean Drapeau, from somewhere in hell…

2—I went to Tim Horton’s to read my newspaper and have a coffee. As I looked around, I saw one person per table, all drinking coffee and READING!

It was a beautiful, quiet, wonderful moment. It sums up the lazy Canadian summer for me…which has been especially lazy up to now. I’ve tried to read and be somewhat productive, but all I can focus on is (a) rest, and (b) my trip to London, now only 2-and-a-bit weeks away.

MEH! It’s August…who needs to be productive. wink
