MISERY: The apocalyptic wasteland that was New Orleans

Random thoughts, after a day and night of watching parts of the most powerful nation on Earth brought to its knees by the unstoppable wrath of our planet…

The Bad

Watching so many people breaking down, begging for help. I keep veering between sadness, anger, and an aching desire to do something. But there’s not much any of us can do, except pray, or donate to charities.

CNN reports that the waters may stick around until February! My mind boggles…

The Mayor of New Orleans believes that hundreds, perhaps thousands, may be dead. Bodies float in the streets. Attics may very well be tombs and coffins. My stomach retches…

The Excruciating

Speaking of CNN, they’ve been dong a damn fine job of covering this tragedy. There has been little sensationalism, much analysis, and a broad range of interviews, updates…as well as all those harrowing, haunting, staggering images. In short, they’ve been behaving like the ideal news gathering organization that they should always be…at least, when they’re not chasing ambulances, or covering the deaths of pretty, suburban white girls, or hounding Michael Jackson into social leprosy.

Meanwhile, our strike-bound CBC is providing what may be the worst coverage in history. It’s beyond description how incredibly repulsive their news managers/scabs looks on television, but this past evening, it reached a new low. The earnest but totally out-of-his-depth/temporary anchorman was interviewing someone from the disaster zone…

…and that’s when I realized that the supposedly on-location reporter HAD BEEN BLUE-SCREENED INTO THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS!!!

It’s the most hideous, amateurish display I’ve ever seen in a newscast. Do they actually think people will believe the CBC has someone on the ground in New Orleans via technological trickery? There are Doctor Who episodes from the 1970s where the blue-screen work looks more realistic!! Utterly repulsive!

The Utterly Disgusting

Looters. So many looters raiding stores and houses and ATMs throughout New Orleans that the police have no choice but to let them continue – there isn’t enough manpower to go around.

My first reaction to such depraved, lowest-common-denominator examples of humanity? Shoot them! It’s worked before…

My less emotional reaction? Capture them in a big net, dump them into the Gulf of Mexico, surround them with fresh chum, and let the sharks deal with them!

Ok…we’re not going to get a rational response from me…not while I have to watch the scum of humanity taking advantage of the situation.

Whatever happened to disasters bringing about the best in people…? God, it’s been a rotten day!
