Brian Mulroney: Stupendous Egotist

Today’s the big day: the release of The Secret Mulroney Tapes: Unguarded Confessions of a Prime Minister, by Peter C. Newman. Years and years of taped conversations with the former Prime Minister, revealed for the first time.

Not surprisingly, it’s full of his hatred for Pierre Trudeau, Lucien Bouchard, Kim Campbell, Jean Chretien, the press, the butcher, the baker, the candlestickmaker…and everyone else who doesn’t fawn at his feet. Members of the American and foreign elite are naturally exempt, because they’re the only ones who understand him (boo hoo!). The newspapers and TV news programs have been filled with his quotes for days — quotes that range from stunning to disgusting to delusional!

Apparently, he’s now “devastated” and “betrayed” and regrets talking candidly to Peter C. Newman.

Um…I sincerely doubt that.

This man would never have agreed to this if he didn’t want it to eventually see the light of day — to look at it any other way is simply delusional…right up there with his claim that he’s the greatest Prime Minister since John A. MacDonald (pause for raging laughter!)…

In any event, I’m fascinated by this man — who single handedly destroyed the Progressive Conservative Party, dumped the country into a debt that would make Trudeau blush, and kissed up to the Americans with a trade deal they now ignore on a whim. Fascinated enough to eventually pick up this book and have a taste of a man with an ego that can block out the sun.

It’ll make a nice companion piece to what I’m reading already: America (The Book), by Jon Stewart. One comedy deserves another…
