And Wilma makes 3...

Wilma makes for a season of 21 named storms, and 12 hurricanes…THREE of them reaching Category 5 status.

Will the U.S. be ready for this one? FEMA thinks so…but I don’t think anyone believes a word of it. Have you seen the state of the Gulf coast? Over 11 000 people STILL live in shelters across a dozen states. THIS is the result from being “ready” for Hurricane Katrina!

The most heartbreaking incident was on CNN. I watched a family evacuate from their temporary, FEMA-provided mobile home — a result of the damage from Hurricane Charley in 2004! — and head for alternative shelter, as Wilma sets its sights on their still-damaged corner of Florida. The only possession the mother was taking was a tightly sealed plastic case, containing the ashes of her father.

It’s getting monotonous to say, but…THIS should not be happening in such a rich and powerful country. It’s pathetic, and it’s disgusting…and it’s worrying that a little voice in the back of my head is saying that we Canadians wouldn’t do any better…

I’d like to believe we would…but I’m too much of a realist…
