You’ll think the United States is such a place when you read this article on CNN, marking the most dubious landmark of the age: the 1000th execution in the United States since the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted in 1976.
*There are now 3,400 people on death row.
*The U.S. executes, on average, one person every 10 days.
*Since 1976, 58 percent of those executed in the U.S. were white while 34 percent were black, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. But non-Latino whites make up 75 percent of the U.S. population, while non-Latino blacks comprise just over 12 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
*There is even a pro-death penalty lobby group called “Throw Away the Key”.
This is all utterly disgusting — simple barbarism. Have murders stopped? Has violent crime resulting in death been deterred? Of course it hasn’t…but the United States continues to perpetrate vengeance as justice…and continue to be led by a man who can’t even spell clemency, let alone fathom its meaning.
So, as we approach this dubious event, take a moment to weep for civilization.
