So, let me get this straight…
For seven years and 150 episodes of South Park, in which all sorts of religious taboos have been broken, and all sorts of sick, twisted jokes have been made about Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and a host of other religious figures, Christian and non-Christian, Isaac Hayes (the man behind the theme of Shaft) has had no trouble being the voice of the school chef.
Now, suddenly, when his OWN religious beliefs are satirized (Scientology…which, let’s face it, thanks to Tom Cruise and his buddies, has become a giant bullseye!), he decides to quit, citing that the show has gone too far!?
This is the man who spent seven years singing lick my salty balls! This is a man who’s been on a show where Jesus turned water into wine by simply switching pitchers when no one was looking! This is the show that sparked outrage most recently with their “Bloody Mary” episode…and Hayes stuck around for that!
South Park lampooned Scientology and its celebrity followers most recently in an episode entitled “Trapped in the Closet,” which aired in North America last November.
In the episode, Stan — one of the lead characters — scores extremely well on a Scientology test and is hailed as a new saviour, much to the chagrin of the cartoon version of Tom Cruise.
If that’s what it took to make Hayes quit the show after seven years…was he actually AWARE of what type of program he was a part of?
Spare me! Once again, hypocrisy knows no bounds. It would seem slighting Tom Cruise was the LAST STRAW!
What HAS this world come to…?
