The AWARD-WINNING Doctor Who!

bafta2006drwho.jpg

Congratulations to the Doctor Who team for winning BAFTA Awards (the British equivalent of the Oscar and Emmy Awards) for the following:

(1) Best Drama Series

(2) The Pioneer Audience Award, which was voted for by TV viewers

(3) The Dennis Potter Award for Outstanding Writing for Television, to Doctor Who show-runner Russell T. Davies

Doctor Who has conquered the critics AND the ratings, re-created family evening viewing on television, and resurrected itself for a new generation…in the face of so many people who said it couldn’t be done. Let the results speak for themselves: we live in a world where, on rare, glorious occasions, lightning DOES strike twice.

Speaking of which, this past weekend’s episode, The Girl in the Fireplace, was sheer poetry…but that’s for another day… :-)

And speaking of another day…after 18 years, that day has arrived, with the return of the Cybermen being promoted to the hilt. I’ve always fancied the Cybermen as villains far more than the Daleks…terrifying used-to-be humans who gave up their emotions — and their souls — for bionic strength and metallic immortality. The Cybermen are truly the stuff of nightmares, and I can’t wait to watch their latest re-incarnation…

Thank goodness for friends with download facilities! I haven’t felt this happy and fanboy-ish since the early 80s and the wonderful start to Peter Davison’s era as the 5th Doctor. The same giddy wonder…the same hand-rubbing anticipation…the same joyous afterglow.

Being a geek is wonderful!
