The Bittersweet

A mini-round up of good news and bad/sad news…

(1) With the announcement of their fall schedule, the CBC has now confirmed that DOCTOR WHO Season 2 will begin airing across Canada on Thanksgiving Monday, October 9th . I’ll have seen the entire season by the time it arrives here…but that won’t stop me from watching it again. smile

(2) John Cleese has announced that he is retiring from TV and film performance. Instead, he will devote his time to writing a history of comedy, as well as teaching its art and craft, as you can read for yourself in THIS report.

Part of me is devastated. After all, this is a man synonymous with comedy genius, be it television’s Monty Python, the silver screen’s A Fish Called Wanda, or the 1970s sitcom Fawlty Towers — which remains the single greatest comedy series ever created in this entire universe. Hell, in ANY universe! Quite simply, if John Cleese can’t make you laugh until you lose bladder control, you’re most likely dead!

And yet…if this man can inspire people to be even HALF as witty, as clever, and as hilarious as he has been over the last 40 years, then the world will become a much better place. At the very least, we might be spared much of the half-baked tripe that masquerades as comedy these days…usually American. Save us all from the Jack Black-Scary Movie-lowest common dumbass quotient of the universe!
