The Pope has waded in to Canadian politics, scolding Canada for its stand on gay marriage and abortion. Here’s an excerpt of his ridiculous diatribe from the CBC news site:
“In the name of tolerance, your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse,” the Pope told a group of bishops from Ontario. “In the name of freedom of choice, it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children.”
Such laws, Benedict said, are the result of “the exclusion of God from the public sphere.”
He lamented that Catholic politicians had yielded to “ephemeral social trends and the spurious demands of opinion polls.”
The exclusion of God from the public sphere?!
Let us offer a lesson to Benedict XVI: in the thousand plus years when God WAS the centre of public policy, what was the result?
(1) The Crusades
(2) The Inquisition
(3) Pogroms against Jews and other non-Christians
(4) Genocide of native peoples
(5) Institutionalized rape and abuse, masquerading as schooling
(6) burnings of heretics and witches (which comes with a devestating anti-female bias)
In short, whenever God has been mixed into the public sphere, the results have been murder, hatred and destruction on a scale that is incalculable! But try telling that to the Vatican — the institution that is LEAST likely to learn from its bloody and despicable past.
As for the public scolding, the Pope shouldn’t be throwing stones from glass houses. Has he ever answered the question why he feels comfortable wearing hideously expensive & ostentatious Prada shoes and Gucci sunglasses, when so many people around the world could use such funds to fight disease & malnutrition?
