I should have seen it coming…but even I was taken aback by what I saw on the front page of The Globe and Mail this morning:
TORIES PLAN TO PROTECT SAME-SEX OPPONENTS
If government loses bid to reopen debate, Defence of Religions Act is next option

OTTAWA — The Conservative government is planning measures, including a Defence of Religions Act, to allow public officials, such as Justices of the Peace, to refuse to perform same-sex marriages.
The measures are also intended to protect the free-speech rights of religious leaders and others who criticize homosexual behaviour or refuse to do business with gay rights organizations, The Globe and Mail has learned.
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. The repugnant slime pool that masquerades as our Conservative government is thinking about passing a law that will PROTECT BIGOTS in our society…and PROTECT BIGOTS who work for the government, and are expected to offer government services to all people, without discrimination.
What’s next? Protecting those who don’t want to do business with gay people? Protecting those who advocate such people as subhuman, second-class citizens?
This sounds familiar…let me flip through my history books, and look up the United States during Jim Crow…or pre-WWII Germany…now THERE was a slippery slope. Just ask any Jewish person who survived the era…
And once people have legal protection for their hatred, what’s the next step? Segregation? Box cars? Camps with barbed wire, perhaps?
I think I’ve seen this film somewhere before. The longer I live, the more and more I realize that religious-fundamentalist-neo-conservative wankers believe that the lessons of history are something that apply to OTHER people!
And then, move on to the next minority group…women, immigrants…the bigotry train has room for multiple persecutions!
Let the government TRY and pass such a despicable piece of inhuman legislation…but I have confidence that Canadians will NOT let this happen. We live in the most functional secular society this world has ever seen…and I’ll be damned if narrow-minded weasels take that away from the generations of citizens to come.
As for the architects of this planned, institutionalized hatred, I have two things to say to you:
(1) This legislation legalizes hatred. I don’t care if it’s cloaked in the language of protecting religious freedom…it’s just a sham. It is BIGOTRY AND HATE.
(2) Anyone who supports this legislation is a BIGOT. I don’t care how you justify it, you are WRONG, and I look forward to the day when such people are pitied and reviled in history textbooks as the relics of a barbaric, repulsive past age…
You’ll now have to excuse me…I need to wash the taste of vomit out of my mouth.
