Good News on the Geek Front

(1) DAVID TENNANT WILL BE A 3-YEAR DOCTOR!

It would seem that our worries are over, and our insecurities are without foundation. In the aftermath of 9th Doctor Christopher Eccleston’s sudden departure after one series of Doctor Who, fandom can breathe a sigh of relief. David Tennant has signed a million-pound deal for this third season as the travelling Time Lord…and, in my opinion, it’s money well spent.

Eccleston was fabulous, but Tennant is equally brilliant…a brilliance enhanced by his clear love of both the show and the role. We haven’t had a Doctor that has reigned across three TV seasons since Sylvester McCoy’s time in the late 1980s – it will be wonderful to watch another Doctor grow and develop with the passing of time. I certainly hope Tennant stays for a fourth year — I haven’t felt this much fanboy love & affection for a Doctor since Peter Davison held the mantle from 1982 to 1984.

Did I mention that Davison was my childhood hero? Oh…I think I just did. :-)

(2) GALACTICA HAS A GROWTH SPURT

Battlestar Galactica fandom can also suffer from its own insecurities. Initially, when season 4 was commissioned, it was announced that the episode tally would only be 13, as it was in the first season. Many pundits viewed this as a lack of support on the part of NBC/Universal, and an indication that Galactica might come to a premature end.

These concerns have been put to rest with the sudden revelation that season 4 will actually contain 22 episodes – the highest total to date – as well as a 2 hour TV-movie, telling the story of the late, lamented Battlestar Pegasus’ escape from the initial Cylon attack on the Twelve Colonies.

So…the world of sci-fi/fantasy is safe and sound once more…and it would seem that I’m very easy to please. ;-)
