Ahh…Danny Williams: Premier of Newfoundland. I have never appreciated you more than I do at this very moment.
We haven’t always agreed, but you are — without a doubt — a man of forthright determination and character.
Responding to a Stephen Harper crack about Newfoundland & Labrador’s recently tabled budget, Williams let rip with his own brand of charm and old world courtesy:
“His attitude of Atlantic Canada is that we’re a culture of defeat.”
“He hasn’t changed that. He’s pretended he’s changed it to the people of the country…He’s a chameleon, he changes his colours and his clothes to suit whatever the political need is at the time.”
“His buddy [U.S. President] George Bush calls him Steve, so, you know, I can call him Steve. I’m not a buddy of his.”
“By the same token, I have to basically treat him with the same disdain that he’s treating [residents of Newfoundland and Labrador].”
Not a bad week for Stephen Harper…not bad at all. He’s managed to piss off an already-ticked Premier, he’s running scared from allegations that he’s letting Canadian soldiers hand over prisoners for torture in Afghanistan, and he’s released a revised environmental plan that absolutely no one likes…or takes seriously!
Let’s hope he has more glorious weeks like this one… ;-)
