THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES - Series 1: Episodes 9 and 10 (SEASON FINALE)

THE LOST BOY

Written by Phil Ford

Directed by Charles Martin

Reasons why The Lost Boy ties up the first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures wonderfully:

(1) The pace – these two episodes move like lightning, and they are full of plot developments, revelations, and action set-pieces that never let up. It wastes absolutely none of its two 25-minute installments.

(2) Elisabeth Sladen’s finest performance…yes, even better than Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane. She runs the gamut of emotions, faces terrible loss, unexpected salvation, and life and death confrontations with panache. If this series has proven anything, it’s the fact that Ms. Sladen is an incredibly under-rated actress, who is finally getting the glory she deserves.

(3) Alan Jackson comes into his own. Joseph Millson has been an unsung background joy in most of these episodes…but with The Lost Boy and Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane, he transforms into a new, if slightly reluctant, member of the team…and brings a dry, witty dad-weariness to his new found hero-status.

(4) Clyde’s finest hour – even Mr. Smith recognizes that he isn’t as stupid as he pretends to be – and Daniel Anthony takes full advantage of this upsurge in bravery and smarts. He’s turning out to be quite the surprise in this series…

(5) Slitheen in a more serious story: they still have their silly factor, but the tone is definitely darker, more harrowing…and yet, they don’t seem ridiculous in such a situation. A great feat of writing and direction…and I don’t believe they farted once!

(6) Mr. Smith turns evil…then K9 RETURNS (and yes, it must be said IN CAPITALS) to save the day! Of course it had to end that way! smile

The Lost Boy is a wonderful finale. It will leave you breathless, thrilled, amused, fascinated, and utterly content. The perfect ending to a wonderful premiere season of The Sarah Jane Adventures. Roll on, series two!
