STAR TREK (XI)...our first glimpse!

AT LAST!

ew1015trekcover.jpeg

Locked behind the tight-fisted security of Fort Knox, Trekkies have been salivating for some kind…any kind…of hint about the look of Paramount’s re-imagining of the Star Trek franchise.

The decision to move the film from its original Christmas 2008 opening to May of 2009 only made matters worse…just how LONG were the army of geeks — to say nothing of the average, curious joe — supposed to wait for some kind of promotional material?

Well…as you can see from the the new cover of Entertainment Weekly, the wait is over.

The Paramount promotional engine has been engaged (excuse the pun), and we FINALLY get our first look at the new film. The pictures below include shots of the new Enterprise bridge, the main cast, and an F/X shot of a 23rd century Federation starship…and whatever I was expecting to see…it certainly wasn’t THIS

Does Chris Pine look HEROIC enough for you, as Captain James T. Kirk? Between his matinee-idol good looks, and Zachary Quinto’s unearthly resemblance to a young Leonard Nimoy as Spock, I’d say we have nothing to worry about, as far as the cast is concerned. Certainly, the hairstyles (check out Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy…beyond eerie) and the beautifully modest updates to the classic uniforms inspire a lot of warm feelings of relief, in regards to staying true to the spirit of the original series design philosophy. The glimpse of the USS Kelvin seems to indicate a bit of early-movie-era TOS design influence…

But GET A LOAD OF THE BRIDGE! I certainly don’t agree with author David McIntee’s assessment that it’s a cheese-fest supreme…butGOOD LORD! It’s absolutely NOTHING like I imagined. If anything, the Enterprise bridge has a distinct Apple store vibe…which will make Steve Jobs extremely happy, I’m sure. I’m guessing that every Federation office now carries an iPod, next to their phasers and tricorders…

So…right now, I’d say it’s looking pretty spiffy. But our next chance to assess the look of the film will arrive with the first trailer, to be shown before the next Bond film, Quantum of Solace, in November. Stay tuned!
