A small city founded in the 11th century…it survived endless invasions and came through WWII unscathed to become the most superb example of Medieval & Gothic architecture outside of Krakow itself. Some of the places we visited weren’t completely open — museums and public places are usually closed on Mondays in Poland. Therefore, I’ll be back for proper looks inside the Cathedral and the Castle later in the week. But there was still a great deal to see & enjoy on today’s visit…
(1) OPATOW GATE
The single survivor of the original four gates that secured the town’s medieval fortifications. We managed to climb it for some nice views…

(2) CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
A Renaissance gem, hidden away behind an unassuming facade.

(3) TOWN SQUARE
The busy, bustling Rynek of Sandomierz (a popular TV show was filming when we visited) slopes down at an angle…and it’s centred on a the medieval town hall: an imposing fortification that you will see in the first picture…

(4) CATHEDRAL
A Gothic 14th century wonder, that slammed into a series of Baroque revisions & additions in the 17th century. I can’t wait to get a better glimpse of the sumptuous interior…

(5) CASTLE
Another 14 century construction, with various later additions, perched above an impressive gorge, looking down into the Vistula River Valley. Another place I can’t wait to get inside…

(6) ST. JAMES CHURCH
Datings from the 1230s, it is believed to be the oldest brick church in Poland, complete with restored Romaneque architecture. This is one church that was open to us, and involved a trek along the oldest, cobblestone street in town.

Ok…I’m taking a break for a couple of days, as we visit new places AND backtrack a few old ones. Until then…
